About the Animal Welfare Information Center Bulletin

The Animal Welfare Information Center Bulletin (formerly Newsletter) is published quarterly and distrbuted free of charge by the National Agricultural Library (NAL). The Animal Welfare Information Center Bulletin provides current information on animal welfare to investigators, technicians, administrators, exhibitors, and the public. Mention of commercial enterprises or brand names does not constitute endorsement or imply preference by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Articles appearing in this newsletter do not necessarily represent positions or policies of the U.S. Department of Agriculture or any agency thereof.

The Bulletin is produced by the Animal Welfare Information Center (AWIC) at NAL. AWIC was created in 1986 in response to a mandate in the 1985 Animal Welfare Act amendments. The Act provides regulatory authority to ensure the proper care and treatment of animals used in biomedical research, in teaching, in exhibition, and by dealers who provide animals. AWIC covers subject areas such as husbandry, handling and care of animals; personnel training; animal behavior; alternatives; improved methodologies; pain control via anesthesia and analgesia; ethics; and legislation and regulations regarding animal use.
